Blood Agar with 5% Rabbit Blood (Thermo Scientific™)

Cultivate Haemophilus species with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Blood Agar with 5% Rabbit Blood. Haemophilus spp. requires hemin (X factor)  and NAD (V factor) for growth, both of which are supplied by Rabbit blood.  Horse blood does not contain V factor -inactivating enzymes and supplies X and V factors, one or both of which are required for the growth of Haemophilus spp. Rabbit blood also allows for differentiation of hemolytic and nonhemolytic species of Haemophilus.

Key Features

Members of  the genus Haemophilus are fastidious Gram-negative bacilli that commonly cause infections of upper respiratory tract. Blood Agar with 5% Rabbit Blood can be used in qualitative procedures for the cultivation of Haemophilus species.

  • Rabbit blood in the medium does not contain V factor -inactivating enzymes and supplies X and V factors, one or both of which are required for the growth of Haemophilus Rabbit blood also allows for differentiation of hemolytic and nonhemolytic species of Haemophilus.
